Newtown Necklace, 2010

Lisa Walker (Françoise van den Bosch Award 2010) came across these knitted finger puppets on a market in Newtown, her neighbourhood in Wellington, New Zealand. It is one of the first pieces of jewellery she made after returning to her native country, after having lived and worked in Munich for many years. Walker uses things she comes across, at markets, in the street, and on the internet. There are no borders: a piece can be very large but still wearable, or clumsily glued together while still being beautiful. Walker: “It is more of a challenge to create an object or piece of jewellery that doesn’t follow the rules of concept.”
