Paul Derrez
(The Netherlands, 1950)
Winner Françoise van den Bosch Award 1980
Paul Derrez is a Dutch jeweller, curator, collector, and influential advocate for contemporary jewellery. Trained at the Design Academy Eindhoven, HKU Utrecht, and the Vakschool Schoonhoven, he established himself as a jeweller in Amsterdam in the mid-1970s and founded Galerie Ra in 1976, which became one of the world’s leading galleries for contemporary jewellery. His own work is characterised by bold, geometric forms, often combining silver and coloured Plexiglas, and by a belief that jewellery should provoke thought rather than simply decorate. Throughout his career, Derrez has explored themes of identity, sexuality, social engagement, and personal freedom, creating jewellery that reflects both the beauty and the tensions of contemporary life. Alongside his artistic practice, he has played a pivotal role in promoting contemporary jewellery internationally as a curator, teacher, collector, and writer.
The award ceremony took place at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, on 18th December 1980.
