Winner Françoise van den Bosch Award 1988

Gijs Bakker is a Dutch designer whose work has had a profound influence on both contemporary jewellery and industrial design. Educated at the (now known as) Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam and Konstfack University in Stockholm, he has designed jewellery, furniture, household products, interiors, and public spaces for leading international companies. In the 1960s, he collaborated closely with his wife, Emmy van Leersum, creating groundbreaking jewellery that challenged conventional notions of adornment. Throughout his career, Bakker has continued to innovate through the use of new materials and production techniques, often blurring the boundaries between jewellery, design, and everyday objects. He is also widely known as the co-founder of Droog Design and the initiator of Chi ha paura…?, both of which have played a significant role in shaping contemporary design and jewellery discourse worldwide.

The award ceremony took place at Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, on 25 February 1988.
